Appleton Mills
Appleton Mills, previously known as the "Freudenberg
Nonwovens Mill," was completely renovated in 2011 by Trinity Financial. Appleton Mills is home to 130 residential units and a separate building that
houses UMass Lowell's Innovation Hub. Common areas include a gallery in the
five-story open atrium with skylights, a community room, on-site laundry, and a
fitness center. Each apartment features high ceilings, hardwood floors, granite
countertops, and stainless-steel appliances. In 2012, Appleton Mills received the
Paul E. Tsongas Award for historic preservation.
The community is uniquely prioritizing artists on its
waiting list, aligning with the city's goal of fostering a creative economy in
its downtown area. Appleton Mills is also one of 40 properties in the state
that participate in the New Lease for Homeless Families program. The program
designates four two-bedroom apartments for formerly homeless families who have
met specific benchmarks.
The property is surrounded by the Lower Lock Canals that
run through the entire downtown historic district of Lowell. Appleton Mills is
also a part of the JAM project (Jackson Appleton Middlesex Urban
Revitalization). The Trinity Hamilton Canal Limited Partnership team was
selected by the City of Lowell to become the Master developer of the site, with
a plan to attract new businesses, support existing businesses, improve
transportation, and create a safe, accessible, and visually appealing
environment.
